D iscerning consumers of dairy products are not content to be kept in the dark about milk production methods, especially those pertaining to farming practices as it affects the animals and our environment. Free Range Dairy cc was established with the aim of formulating and implementing standards for free range dairying so that consumers of dairy products thus certified can rest assured that the milk for those products is produced by Healthy and Happy cows that are always treated in a Humane manner. This means that the cow's digestive system is designed to digest primarily grass. In dairying, there are essentially two production methods. Cows are either housed in sheds for all or part of the time where they are crowded together. Or they are out on pastures, where their movement is not restricted in any way and they harvest grass or legume pastures as nature intended. These requirements relate to cow comfort, animal health, animal well-being, veterinary care, health and facilities certification, environmentally friendly practices, complete absence of added hormones and antibiotics, nutritional integrity and many more requirements.
